The Conundrum Continues.

I want to examine what is a very real Spiritual Conundrum for many people today.

The conundrum is summed up in the first 8 words of Romans 11:22  Consider, then, the kindness and severity of God:

I find today that many people are confused, and or even worried by what seems to be a contradiction of God’s nature or character in the Bible.    Some have just simply given up on God because of their present situation, which is often the result of an unwise decision or action they made or took in the past, but the result is they now find themselves living in sin, or out of God’s will for their lives.

This is a situation which they now sincerely regret, but one which is extremely difficult for them to remedy, and it is very common amongst young people in particular, but older people are also affected, with the result that the devil is now using that situation in order to bring condemnation and confusion into the hearts and minds of these people, and thus try and keep them from having a meaningful relationship with God, and if possible to even drag them back to a lost eternity.

So let us look at “What the Bible Says” and we shall be looking at both sides of this conundrum in order to find what is being taught in scripture.

Consider, then, the kindness of God. Paul tells us of his own struggles here.

“CEV” Romans 7:14-20We know that the Law is spiritual. But I am merely a human, and I have been sold as a slave to sin.  In fact, I don’t understand why I act the way I do. I don’t do what I know is right. I do the things I hate.  Although I don’t do what I know is right, I agree that the Law is good.  So I am not the one doing these evil things. The sin that lives in me is what does them. I know that my selfish desires won’t let me do anything that is good. Even when I want to do right, I cannot.  Instead of doing what I know is right, I do wrong. And so, if I don’t do what I know is right, I am no longer the one doing these evil things. The sin that lives in me is what does them. ….. v24 What an unhappy man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is taking me to death? v25 Thanks be to God, who does this through our Lord Jesus Christ! This, then, is my condition: on my own I can serve God’s law only with my mind, while my human nature serves the law of sin”.

Paul is acknowledging that he is a sinner, “sold as a slave to sin” although he is saved by God’s grace, but he is still not completely able to overcome the sin which remains in his body.

We need to remember that when we are born again, we become spiritual children of God, and it is the spirit which is acknowledging that God’s law is good, but our flesh, until we are transformed at the time of the resurrection, or the rapture, will fight our spirit all the way. This is God’s kindness to us, when we are truly “Born of God’s Spirit, we become His children and all our sins have been paid for by the death of Jesus, and we are no longer under the law of sin and death. We have been saved by His grace.

Matthew Henry says. “We are delivered from the power of the law which curses and condemns us for the sin committed by us. The sentence of the law against us is vacated and reversed, by the death of Christ, to all true believers. The law saith, The soul that sins shall die; but we are delivered from the law.   It is the unspeakable privilege and comfort of all those that are in Christ Jesus that there is therefore now no condemnation to them. He does not say, “There is no accusation against them,”

Romans 8:23 Not only the world, but we also have been waiting with pain inside us. We have the Spirit as the first part of God’s promise. So we are waiting for God to finish making us his own children. I mean we are waiting for our bodies to be made free.

We have seen the goodness of God towards us, now let us look at God’s severity, because if we are not careful it could fall upon us.

James 2:14 My friends, what good is it for one of you to say that you have faith if your actions do not prove it? Can that faith save you?  James 2:17 Faith that doesn’t lead us to do good deeds is all alone and dead!      Dead faith will not get us into heaven.

What is James saying here? He is saying, “Talk is cheap, put your money where your mouth is.”   He is saying what Jesus said in Matthew 7:17-23 “In the same way, every good tree produces good fruit, and bad trees produce bad fruit.   A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot produce good fruit. Every tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire v21 “Not everyone who calls me ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the Kingdom of heaven, but only those who do what my Father in heaven wants them to do. When the Judgment Day comes, many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord! In your name we spoke God’s message, by your name we drove out many demons and performed many miracles!’   Then I will say to them, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you wicked people!’

The question we need to ask ourselves is NOT do we know God, but does God know us?

Good trees or bad trees, — by their fruit you shall know them.

A good fruit tree bears mainly good fruit, but there are nearly always a few rotten fruit on the tree also, where brown rot or fruit fly has got into the fruit causing it to rot.   The crop from the tree can be improved greatly with the correct pruning and by spraying often, and by ensuring that they get plenty of water and fertiliser.

Bad trees bear little or no fruit, and what fruit they do produce is usually stunted, or diseased because the tree has been neglected, not fertilised, not watered, not sprayed, and not pruned.   After a few years of neglect, the tree is only good for firewood.

So if you find yourself in a situation like this, what can you do to remedy it?

Philippians 4:6Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God.”   The first thing to do is to pray and ask God to help you to find a way out of the situation.   God loves you and He can do what you cannot.  1. Don’t forget to Fertilise your prayers with thanksgiving and gratitude and with praise to God for His goodness, be grateful for what He has done for you. Tell God you love him for the sacrifice He made in order to save you from the eternal fires of hell, and mean it from your heart.

Ephesians 5:26 That He sanctifies us and cleanses us with the washing of water by the word”.    2. Don’t forget to water your life, like a tree, we need to be watered, in other words we need to READ the BIBLE so God’s word can cleanse us by washing away the unclean thoughts and desires, so we can be more like Jesus.

Heb 10:25Some people have gotten out of the habit of meeting for worship, but we must not do that. We should keep on encouraging each other, especially since you know that the day of the Lord’s coming is getting closer”. As we can see the day is getting very close it is very important to be 3. Sprayed, don’t forget to shower your life with fellowship with other Christian friends and family, their input into our lives helps to strengthen us and prevent the unwanted rot and fruit fly of sin from getting into our lives.

John 15:1-2 Jesus said to his disciples: I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. v2 He cuts away every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit. But he trims clean every branch that does produce fruit, so that it will produce even more fruit.    Finally, don’t forget to stay in Christ who is the vine or tree from whom we get our life, then we can be 4. Pruned from sin and uncleanness by our Father in heaven.

These four things help us build a real relationship with Jesus, and He will certainly know us on that day, even if we have failed Him at times, as we all do, but as long as we maintain our relationship with the Lord in these ways, we can be sure that as Romans 8:1 Tells us There is no condemnation now for those who live in union with Christ Jesus.  All our sins have been laid on Jesus, as long as we live in union with Him.

No one can live without food and water for very long, neither can we live long Spiritually, if we are cut off from our Spiritual food and water, which is Prayer, Reading the Bible, Bible Study, and Christian Fellowship!!!
