What The Bible Says.
Gen 2:16 The LORD God gave Adam this command: “You may eat from any tree in the garden.
Gen 2:17 But you must not eat from the tree that gives knowledge about good and evil. If you eat fruit from that tree, on that day you will certainly die!”
Gen 3:4 But the snake said to the woman, “You will not die. Gen 3:5 God knows that if you eat the fruit from that tree you will learn about good and evil, and then you will be as Gods!”
So – who was telling the truth? Did Adam and Eve die the day they ate of the fruit of the forbidden tree?
Most people say “No, they lived for many years after that and had many children”
The Bible tells us that God does not lie. So who was lying?
God was telling the truth, but “Satan” in the form of the snake was deceiving Eve with a half truth.
God created Adam and Eve in the likeness and image of God, which means that they were created with a body, a soul and a spirit. When God told Adam he would die, God was speaking of Adam and Eve’s spirit, which God knew would be cut off from its life source – God. Satan was speaking of their bodies, but he knew all along that God was speaking about their spirit, so Satan was lying.
Lets look at what happened and we shall see what God meant. Gen 3:8 During the cool part of the day, the LORD God was walking in the garden. The man and the woman heard him, and they hid among the trees in the garden.
Here we can see that God used to come in the evenings to have fellowship with Adam and Eve, it was that fellowship with God that kept them alive spiritually. The fruit of the trees kept only their bodies alive. So on that day, Gen 3:23 tells us that “The LORD God sent the man out of the Garden of Eden to farm the ground from which the man had been formed.
Gen 3:24 After he sent the man out, God placed angels and a flaming sword that turned in all directions east of the Garden of Eden. He placed them there to guard the way to the tree of life.
Man was cut off from his spiritual food and he died on that day to God. Since then we have all been born spiritually dead, cut off from God by our sin, and this is the reason why we need to be “Born Again” See more in “Born Again – WHY”.
